Today, our darling Sumatran tiger cub Bakso is turning one year old at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Over the past year, he’s charmed us with his playful spirit, bright eyes, and boundless curiosity — truly a living symbol of hope for Sumatran tiger conservation everywhere.
From Tiny Cub to Majestic Young Tiger
Born to mom Sohni and dad Conrad, Bakso started life as a fragile bundle of orange-and-black fur with faint stripes and blue eyes. Over time, his personality bloomed — curious, brave, and full of wonder.
Now tipping the scales at over 140 pounds, he’s grown into a confident young tiger, boldly showing off his stripes as he explores his habitat along the Maharajah Jungle Trek.

Celebrating with Care
Bakso’s birthday isn’t just treats and fun (though he’s definitely enjoying ice treats and goat’s milk) — it’s also a tribute to the devoted cast of animal-care experts behind the scenes. From nutritionists and veterinarians to behavioral managers and keepers, these professionals have nurtured Bakso’s growth every step of the way.
One keeper, Sarah, shares, “I’ve always wanted to work with tigers … it’s a dream to care for a baby tiger like Bakso.”
Meanwhile, Michelle, the Behavioral Husbandry Manager, works closely with his mother and caretakers to shape enriching experiences and help Bakso participate in his own health routines — all while uncovering his unique personality.
A Birthday with a Bigger Purpose
While we’re cheering for Bakso today, we’re also celebrating hope for the Sumatran tiger species. With fewer than 600 tigers left in the wild, every paw-print in our park carries weight. Bakso’s journey reflects a partnership between Disney and the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP), supporting initiatives to safeguard tigers in managed care and in their natural habitats.
